Urban Gallery All-Star Face Off

Coming up fast, it's the second year of mural-against-mural madness over at Neighborhood house. The Urban Gallery All-Star Face Off will be a great chance to check out some of the best and most diverse talents in big visual art paint each other silly in an 18-hour competition. They work their pants off, and we get 9 fantastic new paintings to enjoy as a city. So set aside some time September 17th 12pm-7pm and the 18th 8am-7pm to see the action down at 1050 W 500 S.

So we all know there's magic all around us. But the next couple weeks is extra magical, what with the upcoming Alt Press Fest at the Salt Lake Public Library!

Golfin,' Graffiti-n', Hangin' out with the kids!

Lots of fun stuff coming right up. First on, Contemporary Masters, the best art-golf interaction since Caddyshack. 18 Fully Playable Artist Designed Mini-Golf holes, available free for you at the Art Center, all summer long. It's a blast, and the opening tonight should be packed. My personal favorite is the karmic and difficult Donkey Kong Hole, which reincarnates your ball and allows you to play the classic video game on a from-the-ground-up arcade. It's impressive.

Tomorrow night the Art Truck will be at the Broadway for the Salt Lake screening of Exit Through The Gift Shop, Banksy's street art film. I'd strongly recommend it, you can read my review of it here. The Art Truck will be there from 8:30 to 10:30 Saturday night.

In a less sub-cultural setting, if you're from up north, the Art Truck can be found at the Bountiful Davis Art Center next monday, from 6:30-8:00pm. Finally, find us at the Utah Arts Festival, chillin' in the sun, all day every day the 24th-27th.

Oh, hello there internet! I'm Davey D, the Art Truck driver/docent, I'm here to bring a little life back to the 337 Project blog!

Ah. maybe that's a little too much life. I'm coming to grips with the fact that I'm a huge dork. But seriously, I'm excited about this, my job rocks. Basically, I nomad about and hang out with creative/inspired folks of all ages in the honkin' big resurrected vegetable delivery vehicle that is the Art Truck. So far, since January, I've brought it to 21 schools, 8 festivals,conferences,or events, and just short of 10000 people.

It's been a blast. A mobile, changing art gallery is of course ephemeral, but I've really appreciated the subtle changes day to day. The way Trent Call's brushed mural matched the color scheme of the mountains one winter morning in Provo,

or the experience of being huddled within the truck with Islandview Residential Treatment kids in the hail.

But even better than the visual/tactile presence of the truck is getting to meet so many great kids and people across Utah. I get to introduce them to something wonderful, something that gives them food for creative thought or blows their mind a little bit.

It's also fun to reflect back on these pictures, and see how much the installation Pam Bowman created has been added to over time. I only have a crappy iPhone pic right now, but I'll get another one up soon. It's become an organic hive of ideas, overwhelming and certainly a lot of fun to experience with people.

Now that the school year's winding down the truck begins to transition from school visits to frequenting festivals, I'll doff my teacher hat in favor of some sunglasses and a tiki torch, or something. Keep an eye out for the Art Truck around your town, expect to see me at the Orem Arts in the Park Fest, The Utah Arts Festival,and of course a bunch of surprising places in between. I'll try to start twittering my location in advance sometimes, so keep an ear to the ground.

'Present Tense' Art Rises from Dust of 337 Project

Today's Tribune has a great article about Present Tense: A Post-337 Project, featuring an in-depth discussion of works by 337 Project artists Mike McGlothlen and Ben Wiemeyer. The Tribune also discusses our forthcoming collaboration with the BYU Museum of Art and installation artist Dan Steinhilber. Of Steinhilber, the Tribune notes:

Bottom line, Steinhilber is funny, and willing to improvise. he's also agreed to install new work in a moving truck that Salt Lake City's newest arts nonprofit, the 337 Project, is launching. So there are two ways to get a load of Steinhilber this December: one in the hallowed halls of a museum ready to take risks, and another in a truck you just might find parked outside your house one morning.

Returning to its roots, the 337 Project will transform the urban landscape once more with Urban Gallery, a major new art installation featuring original work by: Biroe, Ben Wiemeyer, Trent Call, Christian Arial, Sri Whipple, Joe Thomas, Margaret Willis, Caleb Workman, Wren Ross, Trent Alvey, and Jann Haworth!

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon will unveil the works to the public for the first time on October 3, 2008, 7:00 pm, at 1050 S. 500 W., Salt Lake City. Urban Gallery celebrates the good work of Neighborhood House, a local charity that has been providing daycare services to low income families for 114 years.

Urban Gallery is part of A Night of Art on the Westside, which will see special openings at Captain Captain Studios and the Bridges Over Barriers Project Warehouse, as well as participation by westside mainstays Mestizo Coffee House and Art Access.

Urban Gallery is made possible by generous support from: Neighborhood House; Art Access; Snow, Christensen & Martineau; the Salt Lake City Arts Council; and individual donors.

337 Hottest Party in Town! Friday, Sept. 19!

On Friday, September 19, the Salt Lake Art Center will be celebrating the end of Present Tense: A Post-337 Project by hosting the Present Tense AfterParty! The bash begins at 10 pm and runs til 1 am with food, drink, music and a special midnight showing of Afterimage: The Art of 337! Join us for the hottest party in town!

THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF OPENINGS FOR THIS EVENT AND YOU MUST HAVE A TICKET TO GAIN ENTRY.

We're Collectible!

One of the hallmarks of the 337 Project so far is that you can't take it with you. Most of the works created for 337 Project events are site-specific and are destroyed at the end of the run. But that doesn't mean you can't add work by a 337 Project artist to your collection.

Yesterday's Salt Lake Tribune featured an article on starting a collection in which Jeff Lambson, Curator of Contemporary Art at BYU MOA, specifically called out the artists of the 337 Project as a good place to start. According to Lambson:

Collections should pay attention to artists whose work has appeared in roughly three "significant" shows, and he spoke repeatedly of a growing and vibrant community of up-and-coming Salt Lake area artists, including some featured in last summer's 337 Project. "Buy what you love," Lambson said. "And what you can afford."

So, just remember that if you see a piece of work you love at a 337 Project event, but you can't take it with you, I'm always happy to introduce you to the artist that created it. You can contact me at adam@337project.org.

Guest speakers will include 337 Project Artists Ben Wiemeyer and Margaret Willis, as well as some of our partners from the community, including Jacob Brace, Executive Director of Neighborhood House, and Jeff Lambson, the new Curator of Contemporary Art at BYU Museum of Art.

A New Show!

The BYU Museum of Art, one of our terrific Community Partners, is opening a new exhibition. The show, Turning Point: The Demise of Modernism and the Rebirth of Meaning in American Art, traces the challenge posed to the established Modernist hierarchy in the 1960s by a group of revolutionary young artists. The results of that struggle are still with us today, having wrought deep and enduring changes in how artists create their works and how the rest of us think about them.

The opening reception for Turning Point is Thursday, July 17, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m at the BYU Museum of Art. Admission is free.

Thanks to Elmer Presslee, who had the foresight to bring a camera to the opening of Present Tense: A Post-337 Project. The art was fantastic, the crowd was enormous. The shuttle bus was as good as a shuttle bus can be. The whole night was a huge success with many of the guests staying for the entire three-hour event. If you didn't get a chance to stop by for the opening, the show will be at the Salt Lake Art Center until September 27, 2008. But don't wait til the last minute because I promise you will want to see the show more than once.

Afterimage: The Art of 337

Afterimage: The Art of 337 is the new documentary film about the 337 Project. A labor of love for its creators, Alex Haworth and Davey Davis, Afterimage is the definitive record of the 337 Project. You can read an in-depth review of Afterimage here, or visit the website of Haworth and Davis to learn more.

Afterimage will play at the Salt Lake Art Center again on Friday June 20 at 7:30 pm (I think) and on Saturday, June 21, at 4:00 pm (definitely). A DVD of the documentary film, containing bonus art footage not included in the theatrical release, will be available for sale for $15 at the Salt Lake Art Center and other local merchants.
